Stop persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan

TO: Rt Hon David Cameron MP, The Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister,

On 22 December 2014 a programme was broadcast on GEO television channel that promoted hatred and violence against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and just days later on 27 December an Ahmadi Muslim, Luqman Ahmad, was shot dead in Pakistan simply on grounds of faith (see Reuters news: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/27/us-pakistan-ahmadis-idUSKBN0K50GF20141227).

The programme, ‘Subah Pakistan’ was hosted by Aamir Liaquat Hussain and featured two religious clerics (Maulvi Humza Ali Qadri and Mufti Arif Shah Owaisi) who openly incited hatred and extremism against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

The clerics labelled Ahmadi Muslims as“blasphemers, “enemies of Islam”, “enemies of Pakistan” and a “common enemy” for all Pakistanis. They urged Pakistanis unite in opposition against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, accusing them of being involved in various ‘plots’ against Pakistan and for the terrorism prevalent in Pakistan as well as being linked to the Peshawar school attack. These are completely false allegations designed to instigate violence against Ahmadis.

In 2008, a similar programme hosted by Amir Liaquat Hussain was also broadcast by GEO TV and it described Ahmadi Muslims as ‘Wajibul Qatl’ i.e. ‘liable to be killed’. Within two days, two well-known Ahmadi Muslims were brutally killed in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

We urge you to:

· raise this matter with the Government of Pakistan to stop the broadcast of hate material on its media and to arrest and bring to justice the perpetrators of violence and hatred against Ahmadi Muslims.

· prevent such extremism from impacting on Britain by prohibiting any programmes being broadcast in the UK that feature Amir Liaquat Hussain or the extremist clerics Maulvi Humza Ali Qadri and Mufti Arif Shah Owaisi who are clearly preaching hatred and violence.

· call upon the Government of Pakistan to repeal its Blasphemy laws and anti-Ahmadiyya laws that are used by extremists as a pre-text for brutal violence against Ahmadi Muslims and other religious communities in Pakistan, denying them their human rights.

In the past thirty years hundreds of Ahmadi Muslims have been murdered and tens of thousands have been forced to flee, simply on grounds of faith. It is time to stop the persecution.
